A higher Hub Score

Raising your Hub Score

Yep, I am excited about it, and with my luck and the fickle HubPage gods, it has probably already dropped while I am typing this.

But, this is a new milestone for me and I am going to crow about it, just a little bit, if you don't mind.

Oh, i know that your Hub Score can go up or down a couple of points in a single day, just from all of the "secret" algorithms that Google ad HP uses throughout the day, and I have been as high as a score of 97 several times, and honestly, I have been steadily bouncing around 93 to 96 over the past several months.

But, I hit 98 today!

So, I am assuming that I am doing something right!

If you read my other Hub titled: Two Years on HubPages and 100 Hubs Later, you will see the level of work that I have had to put in over the past 6 months to get to this point.

The level of work, honestly, has been made even more arduous for me because of the path I took, and the number of older Hubs that i had written when I was in my Purist mode of; I am a writer, and I don't care about all of this; Scores and Money and such. I am a writer and I will do this my way.

Well, let me tell you, stubbornness can cost you a lot of time when you have to go back and rewrite and re-structure dozens and dozens of Hubs so that they don't pull your overall "searchable" ranking with the Google Search Engine and all of the other search engines out there, down.

Brother, let me tell you now, that is work, and I mean significant work, that takes hundreds of hours, if you go as far as I did, before I saw the light.

Even now, I have several dozens of older Hubs that I still have to "upgrade", but I finally had to allocate my time between;

  • my own personal writing which is still my #1 priority,
  • my Blogs which are my #2 priority, especially;
  • ---------- my Cooking Blog called A FRUGAL CHEF
  • ---------- and my RV INFORMATION for CAMPERS Blog
  • ---------- and my Blog of comments and complaints related to Retirees and Baby Boomers
  • and of course my ongoing learning curve and constant renovations (#3).

So, back to my score!

I know, a Hub Score of 98 is pretty good, and i should be happy, but I have learned something from my experiences about myself and my writing.

Writing Quality Hubs

Quality Writing

I have learned that I can't just throw garbage out there on HP. I have to write quality products and i need to format them properly to maximize my audience.

Quality Writing draws a Quality Audience

That is the whole thing about writing, whether on HP, or anywhere actually; Quality Writing draws a Quality Audience, and I now understand that I want that audience, the best of the best, so to speak.

And, honestly, it's not a bad thing to have a high HP score to get new readers. You see, most people, like myself, use the Hubber listing, which starts with those writers holding a score of 100, and then goes down by score.

So, and I think rightfully so, your probability of being read by more people who are searching for good solid writing, is related to your score.

Anyway, I will stop bragging here, and get back to work on my self-improvement program, and reaching for a Hub score that is even higher than my paltry 98! ;>)

And good luck to all of my fellow Hubbers.

Hard Learned Lessons for the Hubber

HubPage Writers

So, for you Beginner Hubbers and you fellow Hubbers that are as frustrated as I was about my Hub Score, I believe that you need to heed a few things from this Hub.

Learn the HubPage System

When you start out as a Newbie Hubber, you need to take the time to LEARN the SYSTEM. Hub Pages has a very systematic approach to every thing that they do in their procedures, and you need to understand them, right out of the gate.

And, by the way, HubPages is an evolving system, and you need to keep up with the changes and go with the flow, so to speak.

Sure, go ahead and put your stuff out there, but you really need to start out clicking on those tabs at the top of the page, and read the HubPage rules. And, don't just read them, you have to understand them.

So, when you really don't understand such phrases as; SEO, Keywords, Tags, etc, then you should do two things;

First, bookmark that helpful Hub that you were reading that seemed to make sense to you, for future reference, and then use the Q&A system to ask your own questions about things that you do not fully understand.

You see, your fellow Hubbers are pretty helpful people, and if you ask an intillegent question, you will get intelligent answers and even great references to; other hubs that can help you a lot, as well as HP links, both of which can bring you up to speed pretty quickly.

And, of course, WRITE! If you are one of those people who only write something every month or so, give it up. You just might not have that burning in the pit of you stomach that drives you to write, to get those thoughts and ideas out of your head, to CREATE!

Bravo, Don! Congratulations! I loved what you wrote, and will take your advice (I'm still in the 70-80s). As far as the New Orleans photo, I'm curious: is the food as good as I hear? Voted up :)

While there, about 6 months ago, a waiter told me that "The life expectancy for natives of New Orleans is on average 4-5 years shorter that i the rest of the US." He told me this as he described how rich and fantastic the food there is. And, it is exceptional, so if you go there be prepared to enjoy some of the best food that you have ever put in your mouth, but at the same time, have a weight loss/exercise plan for when you leave! LOL!

Congratulations, Don. I have had 100 on two hubs -they both have hubpages in the title, by the way which always brings a lot of traffic-and I took a picture of the screen for posterity. It lasted a couple of hours only. Did you take a picture? I didn't write a hub about mine being at 100 because the second one was the article I wrote about my bio being stolen, and quite frankly, I'd rather that article didn't have to be written.

I have been reading about your problems with your "friend", and this is one of the problems of being a good writer like yourself.

While you want the publicity that comes from success, at the same time, it looks like success just makes you a larger target for the brazen thieves out there. Anyway, thanks for the support, and the tip. Anyway I'll keep slugging along chasing the carrot.

Congratulatons, Don! And congratulations on having your books in Amazon. That's amazing and what a 'double advertising' technique.

Your story is inspiring to me a relative newbie. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the great responses. As I suspected, I got up this morning and I was still a 98, and 30-minutes later I dropped to a 97, so it is an ongoing battle to maintain.

Congratulations on reaching 98 despite HP's fickle algorithm! 100, of course, is shout-from-the-rooftops, champagne-popping time, and the first few times I hit the century mark I took screen shots of my profile page AND the first page of Best Hubbers my smiling face appeared on. After awhile, though, even a 100 won't be such a big deal, as you'll find out sfter you hit it a few times...which I've no doubt you WILL! ;D

Thanks Jamagenee, I appreciate the advice. I like the idea, if I ever get there, of framing a Pic of that milestone.

Way to go Don! Please tell me what I might be doing wrong, I can't seem to get above the mid 80's and it's driving me crazy! Even worse I dropped 4 points today and I've no idea why. You're obviously on the right track :-)

Cloverleaf, I am definitely not an expert, but I looked at some of your Hubs, and here are a few things I saw; several only had 2-3 tags, Use H2 headings in your writings, I hear that google doesn't like a lot of Amazon ads, so ask yourself, are you making anything off of Amazon? And a tip I use when writing tags: I ask myself, What would i type to search for this information? --- And this advice is probably worth what you just paid for it -- Ha! Ha! :>) BTW, Great writing and well formatted Hubs. Good Luck!

Excellent Job! The fickle nature of hubscores being what they are...and no one knows what they are...that is still an achievement! For some inexplicable reason one of mine soared (the other day) to 99...sat for awhile...mocking me...then slid back down the pole...never hitting 100. I have never hit 99...so I am still thrilled! Congrats...don't know what you are doing...but it sounds as if you are having fun!

Thanks, T-S, for the response. Yeah, the system, if that is what it actually is, is eemingly more of a wild-west roulette wheel than anything scentific. And, you will love this, literally, while I was bragging, google stopped sending me traffic. I went from 150+ a day to 1-3 a day. Notba clu as to why. Oh well, the Google Gods giveth, and the Google Gods taketh away!

Bob, you're head of me, mate. My best came up today: at 97. Oh, well. We'd probably need to write an good article on how to walk on water to get that 100...and even then it would have to draw some good advertising.

Don Bobbitt profile image

Don Bobbitt Hub Author 7 months ago

Right you are Tom! It seems that the atmosphere is pretty thin when you reach these numbers. And Congratulations on your first 97! Just keep writing and I am confident that you will get to the magic 100! And thanks for the coment.

Hi Don, voted this up, useful and interesting.

I love how easy going your writing is. It is clear and your personality flows through while being informative.

As a fairly new Hubber, I appreciate this Hub. It has given me excellent guidelines...now to make the time to follow and implement them.

It sounds like you are one of the most active retirees out there. BTW, we also have lived overseas in many of the same countries that you mentioned. I loved that lifestyle.

Thanks for the response and kind words, LuxmiH. I appreciate the comments on my writing. That is one of the advantages to writing on HP; You get to practice and improve. Good Luck on your writing, and i look forward to seeing more of yours.
